You Have Been Kind Enough to Assist Me: Herman Stern and the Jewish Refugee Crisis was recently published by NDSU’s Institute for Regional Studies. The author, Terry Shoptaugh of Moorhead will talk about and read from his book on Thursday, January 22 at 7:30 pm. The story of Herman Stern is a compelling account of a North Dakota clothier who rescued more than 100 German Jews from the impending Holocaust in Europe, and how this effort grew until the sudden onset of WWII. Stern ultimately sponsored more than 140 people coming to America and safety. Terry Shoptaugh is a professor of History and the University Archivist at MSUM. He is the author of two previous books on Minnesota and North Dakota history, and is currently writing a book on the role of North Dakota National Guard units in WWII.
