The exhibit consists of 160 photographs taken by the MSUM photojournalism students of Wayne Gudmundson, over two semesters during the 2007-2008 academic year. Gudmundson was inspired to initiate the project after MSUM Department of Art & Design hosted Portraits of Home, an exhibit funded by the McKnight Foundation, which put a face on the issue of homelessness in Minnesota.

Living on the Edge in Fargo-Moorhead, features a spectrum of people, for whom living is often a challenge and illustrates how different entities within the Fargo Moorhead community assist these individuals to become self-sufficient. The photographs document children, college students, families, new immigrants, and the elderly who live on the edge economically, socially or physically, as well as the individuals who work so diligently at organizations such as The Dorothy Day House, Churches United, The Salvation Army, The YWCA, ReStore, and Habitat For Humanity.
