The Smithsonian, in partnership with the North Dakota Humanities Council, brings the exhibit Journey Stories, to local communities in North Dakota. The exhibit will tour in six different locations across North Dakota throughout 2009 and 2010 including Enderlin, Beach, Wahpeton, Casselton, Washburn and Ellendale. Journey Stories examines how and why Americans have traveled from where they were rooted to the next place, in particular, this place called North Dakota. With the forced movement of Native peoples in the state over the last two centuries; the many explorers who traversed this unmapped land since the 1700s; and the immigrants, both historical and contemporary, who have come to North Dakota and stayed or moved on, make this an appealing and important exhibit. The many means of transportation, from horses to oxcarts to railroads, steamboats, canoes, and automobiles, have all left their mark on the state’s landscape and history.
