    The Concordia College 2011 Midwinter Piano Festival, Thursday, Feb.3-Saturday, Feb. 5, is devoted to a bicentennial celebration of the music of 19th Century Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. The schedule of event is as follows:

    o 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 – Dr. Thomas Mastroianni, pianist
    Mastroianni delivers a multimedia presentation of the 3rd volume of “Années De Pélerinage: Italie” by Franz Liszt. Mastroianni is president of the American Liszt Society and professor emeritus of the Catholic University of America.

    o 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 – Jihye Chang Sung, pianist, and Benjamin Sung, violinist
    Chang, is a member of the piano faculty at Concordia, and Sung is the concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and faculty member at NDSU and MSUM. The husband and wife duo will present several of the violin caprices by Italian composer Nicolo Paganini, intermingled with the virtuosic transcriptions of those same caprices for piano by Franz Liszt, known as the “Grandes études de Paganini.”

    o 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 –Masterclass with Dr. Thomas Mastroianni and Concordia College piano students

    o 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 – Lecture: “Malcolm Frager on Franz Liszt” by Dr. Robert Chabora
    Chabora, chair of the Concordia College Music Department, will give a presentation on American pianist Malcolm Frager on the music of Franz Liszt including a video of Frager performing music by Liszt. Chabora’s forthcoming biography of Malcolm Frager will be the basis of his presentation. A short interval with refreshments will follow this session.

    o 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 – Lecture/Recital: “Liszt’s B minor Sonata: Autobiography, Religious Testament, or Faustian Exposition?” by Dr. Jay Hershberger
    Hershberger will explore the literary, biographical, and personal background of Liszt’s acknowledged masterpiece for the piano, followed by Hershberger's performance of the sonata.

    All events are held in Christiansen Recital Hall, Hvidsten Hall of Music and are free and open to the public.
