Mental Health America of North Dakota (MHAND) presents the 2nd Annual "REEL MENTAL ILLNESS: Depictions in the Movies” at the historic Fargo Theatre (314 Broadway) on November 11-12, 2011. The focus of this year's film event is a series of movies depicting people who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

"REEL MENTAL ILLNESS: Depictions in the Movies" kicks off on Veteran's Day, Friday, November 11th with "Reign Over Me" starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. One of his most compelling, dramatic performances, the 2007 "Reign Over Me" finds Adam Sandler portraying an isolated, New York widower who develops PTSD after losing his wife and daughter in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Following the movie, local mental health providers will lead the audience in an informal discussion on PTSD, and they’ll weigh in on the authenticity of Sandler’s portrayal of someone who lives with PTSD.

"REEL MENTAL ILLNESS: Depictions in the Movies" continues Saturday morning with two movies emphasizing the relationship between PTSD and the military. At 9:00 a.m., MHAND will present John Houston's "Let There Be Light", a film produced in 1946 about WW II soldiers who were undergoing psychiatric treatment for what was then known as "shell shock." Distribution of this controversial film was banned by the US Government until 1981.

Produced by PBS, "The Soldier's Heart" follows three Marines who have PTSD, and examines the challenges of living with the psychological scars of being in the Iraq and Pakistan wars. “The Soldier’s Heart” illustrates the challenges soldiers face when seeking treatment for PTSD.

At the conclusion of both movies, MHAND will facilitate the "Let's Get Reel" panel discussion that gives area psychiatrists and psychologists the opportunity to discuss the origins of PTSD, and its historical impact on soldiers and veterans.
