The Concordia College will present the Visiting Writers Festival Wednesday, Oct. 5-Friday, Oct. 7 in Frida Nilsen Lounge. A public reading will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and a student-moderated panel discussion will be at 9:20 a.m. Friday. Both are free and open to the public.

Each fall, the English Department invites three writers to campus to read their work, conduct master classes, participate in a student-moderated panel discussion about writing and literature, and visit classrooms. The department invites a poet, a writer of fiction, and a non-fiction write or journalist to participate. This year’s festival will include poet Tim Nolan, Laurie Hertzel, senior editor for books and special projects at the Star Tribune, and Peter Geye, the award-winning author of “Safe from the Sea.”

Hertzel’s journalism has appeared in newspapers around the country and she has written for various publications and literary journals. She has won national awards for her magazine writing, newspaper journalism and short fiction.

Nolan earned a B.A. in English, an M.F.A. degree in writing and a law degree. He is an attorney with the McGrann Shea law firm in Minneapolis. Nolan’s poems have appeared in many periodicals and his first book of poems, “The Sound of It,” was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award.

Geye holds an M.F.A. from the University of New Orleans and a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University, where he was editor of Third Coast. His first novel, “Safe from the Sea,” was the winner of the Indie Lit Award and the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award. It was also long-listed for the Tournament of Books and the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. He is at work on a second novel.
