Canadian author Guy Vanderhaeghe’s A Good Man, published September 13, 2011, is the last in a historical trilogy that includes The Englishman’s Boy (1996) and The Last Crossing (2002). The novels’ setting is the Montana/Saskatchewan area during the 1870s, a period that witnessed the North West Mounted Police’s creation in Canada, Custer’s Little Big Horn defeat and the 1877 Nez Perce surrender. This class will introduce Vanderhaeghe’s novels, review historical background and discuss fiction’s role in helping us understand what people were “up to with each other and within themselves,” as Toronto University professor Keith Oatley argues. “If you read fiction,” he says, “what you get good at is understanding what goes on between people.”
