Rhetoric of Presidential Campaigns and American Political Culture
February 5, 2012
Add Review/Comment
Elections are not just the mechanism by which the American public expresses its will and decides who its governmental representatives will be. Presidential campaigns, in particular, play a significant role in shaping American political culture. Through the campaign process, America’s self-perception is molded and redirected through the rhetorical acts of the candidates, the mass media that covers them and the public’s response to and evaluation of these messages. We will discuss the figures and tropes employed during the 2012 election process, looking at things like campaign speeches, presidential debates, political advertisements, news commentary and public polling.
