Dr Carll Goodpasture, a research biologist and photographer, arrived in Fargo from Los Angeles in the early 1970’s. He found himself surrounded by a landscape that was totally foreign and fascinating to him. At the time Black Elk Speaks was a popular book, so Dr Goodpasture took on a project of walking in the moccasins of Black Elk to experience this new geography from a Native American point of view. These photographs intention is homage to the first people to inhabit the land and recognition of the environment, as a living animate being.
