From the opening trumpet calls of Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, to 150 voices singing words by Thomas Jefferson and Walt Whitman, to the sweeping cinematic music of Peter Boyer's Ellis Island: The Dream of America, the final concert of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony's 2009-10 season will be stirring and unforgettable.

We are honored to team up once again with Theatre B, seven actors will portray characters telling their personal stories -- gleaned by composer Boyer from the Ellis Island archives -- of their journeys to America. These stories, interwoven with sumptuous orchestral music, create a powerful and moving concert experience.

This piece has also sparked a community-wide project, My Journey, My Story -- Oral Histories of New Americans in Fargo-Moorhead, which was spearheaded by the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. This project, which is now a collaboration of many entities including NDSU, North Dakota Public Radio, Clay County Historical Museum at the Heritage Hjemkomst Center, Lutheran Social Services, City of Fargo, and more, is providing an opportunity for people in our community to share their stories. Items from this project will be on display in the concert hall lobby.
