Pianist Jihye Change joins the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony's own 8th Street String Quartet for this concert. The Fargo Moorhead Symphony and Classical Minnesota Public Radio 91.1 FM will co-sponsor the competition on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Minnesota State University Moorhead. This competition is open to all high school students (Grades 10-12) living within 150 miles of Fargo-Moorhead. Students must play a piece from the approved competition repertory, and can compete using any orchestral instrument, including piano. Music inspired by dance rhythms is performed in a delightfully varied program by the Viotti String Quartet, bassist Alex Pershounin, and harpist Sarahlyn Robinson-Scott, all of whom are members of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. Pieces include Debussy's "Sacred and Profane Dances," tangos by Astor Piazzolla, a disco string quartet, a little Led Zeppelin, and even a world premiere: "Sonata a la Blues" by Alex Pershounin for bass and string quartet.

This charming monodrama by Igor Stravinsky for seven instrumentalists, three actors and a dancer tells the tale of a young soldier who makes a classic bargain with the devil. Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Music Director Bernard Rubenstein will direct select players from the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, including concertmaster Benjamin Sung, in a collaborative performance with actors from Theatre B and a dancer from the Fargo-Moorhead Ballet Company in this delightfully poignant work.
